Oil Tight Top Ends By CycleX.

The problem:
Honda has tried a few things to remedy oil seepage or leakage with modifications like the lower right photo.
After market people have designed new head gaskets in many variations and heavy duty studs were later introduced in another attempt to help with this problem.

Observations:
From the head gasket upwards we have counted 16 areas that could be prone to leakage ..... 4 more areas if the base gasket, head gasket, base "o" rings and valve cover is included.

The cure:

We have eliminated 12 of the 16 areas prone to leakage with
high quality products and machine work.

The feed "O" rings have been re-sized with Viton material and the return "tall O-rings" have been re-sized better materials.

The top of the cylinder head and cam towers have been re-machined in many locations to channel the oil to the cam chain tunnel.
This procedure eliminates 6 of the 8 tall drain "O" rings.

New head gaskets and valve cover gaskets have been produced for the CycleX cure.

Billet pucks (under the cam towers) have been machined with Viton "O" rings and will be available separately or in a "kit form"

Machine the cylinder head and cam towers to re-direct oil return path.
Tap and plug 6 of the 8 original oil return drain holes.

Disassembly of the head is required when oil drain modifications are done.
 (8) 12mm long heli coils are recommended for strength in the cam tower area.

Gasket Identification Early vs. Late:

Read before purchasing our MLS gaskets or any gasket set.

When purchasing Honda CB750 head gaskets, a couple of questions should be to be asked. Early or late? Big drain holes or small?

The above left photo shows an early Honda CB750 cylinder and the arrows show the drain holes from the top end. We call them small for obvious reasons.

The above right photo shows a later Honda CB750 and the arrows show the drain holes from the top end. We are calling them large for obvious reasons. The later cylinder and head gaskets have larger holes because Honda installed 8 dowel pins and 8 tall "O" rings to try to correct head gasket weepage issues.

When using MLS gaskets, our testing showed the 8 dowels and 8 tall "O" rings are not needed because the MLS gaskets work so well. On the other hand, many people were telling us "Well, if Honda did it, it must be right". So, we offer the later head gaskets so people can sleep better at night.

Note: When installing big bore sleeves, early cylinders are always used because the larger sleeves leave little to no room for the 8 tall "O" rings.
With that said, you will not see a "big hole" later model MLS head gasket in 890cc and above cylinders.

Potential Head gasket oil leaks continued:
Always check your dowel pin protrusion. We have measured many head gasket thicknesses when taking motors apart and noticed the average thickness is about .040 after running.
New head gaskets average between .052 to .048 thick and compress to approx .040 ... depending on the gasket.
We have noticed some of those drain hole dowel pins in photo #3 protrude upwards of .040.
So,
If the dowel pin protrudes .040 and the gasket is .040 thick ...... the dowel pin should be trimmed or ground approx. .010 or so shorter just to be sure.

Dowel Pin Kit for Motor Rebuilds

When rebuilding portions of your Honda CB750 dowel pins are generally rusted, stuck and deformed after 4 plus decades.
Here are dowel pin kits that we use on all motor rebuilds.

The 8 dowels #12116-300-000 are late model drain hole dowels between the cylinder and head and are not included because they are never bad and many people do not use them.
