Cam Chain Tensioners...Here is the Problem!

The above photos show an OEM Honda tensioner and an unidentified aftermarket tensioner. These photos were from an AHRMA vintage roadracer's bike (thanks Matt Esterline #237) and clearly show the problem. The OEM tensioner lasted approx. 3 weekend races and the aftermarket tensioner approx. 10 weekend races. These types of product malfunctions are exaggerated when racing is involved, but racing makes for a good test because these results happen in street bikes as well.

Note: Matt's bike is using an OEM stock cam chain tensioner rather than a manual tensioner that has been overadjusted.

These cam chain tensioners are designed to float and compensate for milled heads, thinner gaskets, worn/stretched cam chains and hard deceleration which destroys OEM tensioners. The arrows show how the sliders can move a few degrees to compensate for the above mentioned problems.

The Cycle X Refurbished Chain Wheel and Outer Clutch Hub

We disassembled the cush drive and glass bead for inspection. The inner portion of the hub is drilled and tapped for screws to replace the long rivets installed by Honda to hold the drive together.

Before installing the new cush drive rubbers, we measure the amount of deflection or wobble the two sprockets have. Most hubs have different measurements. But, they generally deflect or wobble over 2mm measured by the outer tooth area, relying on the cush rubbers to keep things somewhat stable. With that said, we surface the outer plates and machine the inner portion to reduce this deflection and wobble.

Before we install the specific length and material cush drive rubbers, we remove and install (2) new needle bearings on the inside.
We like to use later model clutch arrangements and will also fit in earlier motors.
This chain wheel and clutch combo has been refurbished as described above with inner clutch hub oiling modifications.
The chain wheel and clutch assembly combo is then balanced to absolute perfection. (1/2 gram, 1 in. from the center line)

In order to have a good operating transmission, you will need a good operating clutch.
There should be no debate on the benefits of a under-cut transmission.

Dry Film Lubricated Rod and Main Bearings

CT-1 is a Dry Film Lubricant coating that helps reduce friction and abrasive wear. It provides intermittent dry lubrication and is not affected by dust or dirt. CT-1 is specifically engineered to withstand the extreme conditions of today's high performance engines. Professional engine builders enjoy a higher level of confidence with increased embedability, strength and durability.

CT-1 Dry Film Lubricant coating is applied as a spray process. Different surface preparation methods appropriate for the substrates will be used prior to the coating process. Coating thickness is varied to suit the application. Typical coating thickness for engine bearings is 0.00025" to 0.00030" inch (6 to 7.5 microns).

Stories are more fun!

A top level pro-mod drag racer was having connecting rod bearings failures every run down the drag strip years ago, the con-rod bearings were flattened out and were clearly junk. The distraught drag racer happened to reach out to our coating people for answers. Our people provided the pro-mod racer with a set of "dry film" connecting rod bearings and the machine ran more than 12 runs that weekend with virtually no signs of wear. True story!

These 70mm diameter stroker piston kits are designed for 69mm or 70mm crankshafts (63mm is stock) and result in a 1060cc plus displacement. We feel the best way to build a big bore stroker motor is to move the wrist pin holes rather than use shorter connecting rods or spacer plates like people used in the 70's era. These world class pistons are 170 grams (bare weight) and feature our race proven Cycle X domes.

Question:
Are these pistons only for race applications only?
Not really. With the proper camshaft selection and combustion chamber modifications, these kits would make the ultimate "hot street" motor.

Cylinder Sleeves for 836, 849 & 900cc Bore Kits

Even though 836 big bore kits have been around for years, some people believe that the wall thickness is thin. So, many people install these sleeves to regain wall thickness. These sleeves will be needed when increasing bore sizes larger than 65mm (836cc) up to 67.5mm. Outside diam. is 2.916 inches (74mm) The bottom of the sleeve is tapered down 2.752 (69.9mm) to allow the sleeves to fit inside of the upper case without bore the upper case larger. Inside diameter is 2.522 (64.07mm)

#6 Head option (Big port) introduction.

We decided to reproduce our hot-street, race head for you go fast folks. These cylinder heads have modified, machined large intake spigots. Honda CB750 heads only allow the intake ports to be opened up to a certain amount before breaking through to threads or atmosphere. Epoxies are then needed. These heads will be offered in "K" and "F" versions and are specifically designed to use our Mikuni RS 34mm or bigger carburetors, large camshafts and big bore kits.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 

 

 

O-Ring Oil Feed Modification

There seems to lengthy discussions about head gasket thickness, o-ring thickness, cylinder block thickness, oil leaks, oil starvation to the camshaft, etc. Anyway, here is what we have been doing for decades. We install dowel pins so the o-rings stay in place. We have seen many circumstances where people have installed oversize o-rings or thinner gaskets and the o-rings worked their way inwards, causing numerous problems. Honda used this procedure on oil lines and other areas. Not sure why they didn't do this to the top of the cylinder.

Engine Case Main Bearing Alignment Repair
 

Ever notice Honda CB750 main crankshaft bearings have rub marks here and there in a random manner? Ever wonder why Eraldo Ferracci suggested to tighten the main bearing bolts in 2 lb increments checking for a binding crankshaft and recording the torque figure at bind?

We applied blue dye to the engine case main bearing bores to exaggerate our observations years ago for photo purposes.

After applying the blue dye for photo purposes, we inserted our special machined alignment tool, torqued the main bearing bolts and rotated the tool. This procedure exposed tight areas, barely visible nicks in the main bearing area and possibly slight warpage.


Due to the fact that Honda main bearing clearances are generally in the .0015 to .002 range and Plastigage gauge measuring is a crude form of measuring in many circles. This sends up a few red flags about crankshaft alignments. Line boring the cases is not an option because of oversize bearing availability.

The 2nd photo (hard to see) shows these random rub marks with .002 Plastigauge clearances. To help with this potential problem is to remove the high spots, nicks and such ONLY with our special tool and procedure. After the crankshaft is reinserted in the cases and torqued, the crankshaft spins noticeably easier.

Well, they are nowadays with the help of the Cycle X balancing procedures and balancing machine.

We thought you might want to see our balancing machine again with our chain wheel and outer clutch hub balancing rig. These chain wheels and outer clutch hubs have been out of balance up to 16 grams and crankshafts up to 12 grams out of balance from time to time. Our target for balancing crankshafts and clutch components is 1/2 of a gram, 1 inch from the center line. Check out the video of a coin on a running motor that has been balanced to perfection.
